“Fuerstenberger Hof” in Zell am Harmersbach

”Those who do not know anything about the past are not capable of planning the future.” The “Fuerstenberger Hof” is well-known throughout the region and is a constant reminder of what it must have been like in the Harmersbach Valley years ago. A family from the region belonging to the “Fuerstenberg” principality built the massive Black Forest farmhouse 300 years ago. It was a working farm up until 1970. It was turned into a museum in 1974. All of the farmhouse except for the living quarters burned down in 1991. It was then rebuilt in exactly the same style in 1993 using trees from the Black Forest – the planks of wood being held together using 1504 oak pegs – and by volunteers from the village who spent countless hours of their spare time doing so.

One thing that is particularly unusual: The “Fuerstenberger Hof” is furnished as if the whole family has just gone out to get something and has left everything where it was. The living-room with the crucifix hanging up in the corner, the sooty kitchen with the open smoke extractor, the generously furnished room for the newly weds, the bedroom with the romantic canopy bed, the fully-equipped wardrobe for the bride-to-be, the sleigh for taking the family to church on Sundays, Grandma’s room – even the hot water bottle is still there in case it gets cold at night. Farm implements depicting over 300 years of farming are on show up in the loft, a special mill and a device for polishing gems, stables – it’s all there. Even the water trough with running cold water still works and would still be suitable for keeping milk, cheese and butter cold.
