Geroldseck near Biberach

Between the Kinzig and the Schutter Valley high up on a massive rock you will find the castle ruins of the Geroldseck. The castle was built in the year 1250 and was a powerful fortress for that part of the Ortenau. Although it has all gone quiet up there now, the castle’s history comes to life when you stroll around the grounds. The castle has been in ruins for over 300 years. The son of a Swabian duke, “Gerold von Schwaben”, is considered to be the first in the line of “Hohengeroldsecker” at the time of Charlemagne.

The castle ruins have since become a landmark for the region between the Black Forest and the Rhine, which can be taken in at one glance from the top of the tower. “Geroldseckerland” is the land between the Kinzig and the Schutter Valley. There are a number of ways of getting to the Harmersbach Valley from here via Biberach on foot or by bike. It is also well worth your while stopping off in Prinzbach, a former silver-mining community.
