Historic Town Centre Zell am Harmersbach
A town to be proud of! Zell am Harmersbach was originally a settlement founded on land cleared by the monastery in Gengenbach (curia) and was first mentioned in 1139. Surrounded by thick walls the town had no trouble keeping its enemies at bay and has managed to maintain its typical character.
Many things you see take you back to the time when it was first founded; the “Storchenturm” (stork tower), the “Hirschturm” (deer tower), the town wall with its ramparts, which are still intact. A visit to Zell is like a romantic walk back into the past of what was one of the smallest imperial cities, particularly when walking down the high street with its half-timbered historical buildings. Window-shopping or shopping in Zell is something you certainly will enjoy, followed by a piece of Black Forest gateau or an ice-cream sundae in one of the many cafés. Maybe you would like to taste one of the specialities together with a glass of wine in a restaurant or in one of the beer gardens – that’s good!
