Pilgrim Church in Zell am Harmersbach
The most important pilgrim church in the region – pilgrimages go back as far as the crusades. Up until the time of the crusades the people in Zell worshipped “Mary of the Rose”. That was until a journeyman smithy was taken prisoner by the Moors and asked “Mary of the Rose” to help him. He swore that if she did he would in return take the chains he had been put in to her shrine. He managed to escape quite miraculously and kept his promise. During the Thirty Years’ War the chains were to have been turned into horseshoes in an attempt to put a stop to all the pilgrimages. However, while the smithy was getting everything ready they disappeared and were found hanging in the church where they had always been. That is why “Mary of the Rose” is now known as “Mary of the Chains”. The number of pilgrims increased and the church had to be extended three times. It is now the largest of its kind in Baden.
