Motive: Gedenkstätte "Vulkan" bei Haslach
“Vulkan” Memorial near Haslach
The memorial is a reminder of the 1700 prisoners from 19 different countries who were violated, tortured and made to do forced labour in three Nazi concentration camps during the last eight months of the Second World War.
The memorial is up on a hill where the prisoners all had to work and suffer. It is the work of Frieder Haser, an artist who was born in Haslach, next to which there are the ruins of the area where the rocks were broken up and a hoist. The dark and gloomy entrance to the drainage tunnel gives you an idea of what the system of tunnels inside must have looked like. Twelve plaques tell the story of the concentration camp. There is also room for 35 people to sit, so you are quite welcome to linger for a while and talk about what you have seen. It is also particularly helpful for school classes when they are visiting the memorial. Group arrangements can be made in advance.
