Motive: Hansjakobmuseum in Haslach
“Hansjakob” Museum in Haslach
The only museum in this brochure that is dedicated to a writer and author is the “Freihof” in Haslach. The life and works of this great Black Forest chronicler, the son of a baker from Haslach, Heinrich Hansjakob (1837-1916), are on show here. He was a priest in Hagnau (Lake of Constance), where he founded the first winegrower’s cooperative, and in Freiburg. He was an active member of the local parliament in Karlsruhe for a period of ten years. However, he is most famous as an author and writer: He published more than 70 books and reviews.
The “Freihof” houses three important art exhibitions. Paintings by Louis Blum (1822-1854) as well as works of art by Carl Sandhaas (1801-1859), who was from Haslach, are on show on the first floor. He is considered to be one of the most important South German romanticists. On the top floor there is an extensive Otto Laible exhibition. Otto Laible was also born in Haslach (1898-1962). His works in the 1920’s as well as after 1945 had a certain European touch to them. He was also partly responsible, as a professor, for rebuilding the Art Academy in Karlsruhe at the end of the Second World War.
