Historic Town Centre Gengenbach

Gengenbach, a former imperial city, is a pretty little town situated on the banks of the River Kinzig in the central Black Forest. The town is famous for its towers, gates and half-timbered buildings.

A walk around the town takes you back in time when you see the baroque style houses where the wealthy people used to live, the impressive town hall with the knight keeping guard on the well in the middle of the market square and the picturesque alleyways; the houses with their alcoves, balconies and bay windows together with the white stonework and dark wood are just beautiful to look at.

The site where the monastery used to be with the church tower rising up high, which can also pride itself on being one of the finest baroque church towers in southern Germany, the town wall with its ramparts and towers all go to give you a rough idea of the stronghold the town once used to be. It is just like being in an open-air museum, with the one big difference that Gengenbach is full of life and even has a certain southern flair to it on market day.

There are a number of special events throughout the year: Special performances, concerts, plays, musicals, recitals as well as interesting museums and art galleries – all with that certain unique touch. The historic town centre alone has four museums  – carnival, rafting, military and art exhibitions. There are of course other attractions “on the menu”  – our restaurants will certainly not disappoint you.

Welcome to Gengenbach.
