Churches in Gengenbach

When you look at Gengenbach from a distance, one of the first things you notice is St. Martin’s church that is situated next to the cemetery and is quite unique. The other thing you will see is the former Benedictine abbey, which is now the parish church belonging to the diocese of St. Mary’s (7219 Catholics) and is joined onto the palace-like main building (now a technical college and rectory). St. Martin’s church (15th century), which has recently been renovated and looks slightly overpowering from the outside, is done out in a very simple way: Baroque style altars, pulpits, Stations of the Cross, the organ (the only one of its kind in Baden).

The main church beneath the bell tower has three naves (12th century). Inside the church there is a large selection of paintings and sculptures depicting scenes from the Passion and Salvation of Christ as well as a number of saints (1892-1906). The second largest organ from the romantic period in Baden (38 stops) fills the “basilica of the Kinzig Valley” with its beautiful music. The gardens next to the church (including a herb garden and tower) also take you back to the time when it was a monastery. A walk up the hill known as the “Bergle” to St. Jacob’s chapel (17th century) and the nearby chapel of the Holy Sepulchre is well worth it if not only to pay a visit to the two chapels but also to enjoy the view of the town and the surrounding countryside.
