Evangelical Church in Gutach

A church erected by the Lords of Hornberg was first mentioned in 1275. In the 16th century it was officially referred to as “St. Peter’s Parish Church in Gutach”. The church as it stands today was obviously built in two phases and is the most important Evangelical Church in the Black Forest – of which there are not many. The late Gothic chancel (1504) has a beautiful tabernacle as well as a font from the same period. The chancel windows (1955) represent an open bible. The bulbous spire (1781) has become a landmark. The memorial tablets on the outside of the church are dedicated to people from Gutach who have made a name for themselves in one way or another. The war memorial next to the “Dorfkirche” in Gutach was unveiled in 1923 and was created by Professor Curt Leibich. The odd thing about this memorial is that it does not portray a heroic soldier to remind you of the war but a simple woman in mourning wearing the traditional clothes of the region.
