“Schlossberg” near Hornberg

Around 1100 the first castle for the Lords of Hornberg was erected on a rock near Althornberg. A hundred years later the Lords of Hornberg moved to what is known today as the Schlossberg, after parcelling out their lands, and founded the small town of Hornberg down in the valley below, which was surrounded by a town wall up until the middle of the 19th century.

The Schlossberg saw a lot of changes. Between 1641 and 1689 it was burned down both by the Swedes as well as by the French, whereby the French had more than one go at it. In 1801 the whole of the castle and in 1810 the whole of Hornberg and its surrounding villages belonged to Baden. The only parts of the castle that still exist to this day are the castle tower, which is 30 metres high, the powder-magazine, the bastion and the “Neue Schloss”, which was built at the end of the 19th century and is now a hotel (Hotel Schloss Hornberg). The view of the Gutach Valley from up here is quite breathtaking.
