Historic Town Centre Schitach

Schiltach, the town of the half-timbered buildings, rafting and tanners. You can enjoy the peace and quiet and charm of this small romantic health resort any time during the year. The historic town centre of Schiltach is one of the most famous and most beautiful destinations for day-trippers in the Black Forest.

Surrounded by picturesque wooded mountainsides that come down as far as the small town itself. You could say that Schiltach is as pretty as a picture. The unique half-timbered buildings in the historic town centre, a number of which have been renovated, the market square dating from the Middle Ages with its well and town hall dating from the 16th century as well as the three museums make it well worth your while spending a day here. There are a number of trades and handicrafts that are still practised here. You can see the last chamois leather tannery in the Black Forest where they process 60,000 hides a year to make leather and furs and do it in the same way as they did years ago.

Since the Middle Ages Schiltach has its traditional market days (19th March, 29th June, 8th December) as well as the famous New Year’s Eve procession (30th December). Apart from that there are a number of events that take place regularly during the year, such as a special fruit and vegetable market where the farmers can sell their wares or the skilled crafts market.
