"Grube Wenzel" in Oberwolfach

The “Grube Wenzel” used to be one of the most important silver mines in the central Black Forest and is now open to the public. It gives you a unique insight into the history of mining that used to be quite widespread in the Kinzig Valley.

The mine consists of a vast extent of tunnels and can be viewed in groups of between 8 and 10 people, together with a guide, during a tour that lasts about one and a half hours. Since silver used to be used to make coins, there was a great demand for it and so it was something that was always worth looking out for. Exactly when the old miners started digging in Frohnbach and when the first pithead was visible is unknown. We only know that the search for silver was not always particularly successful. In 1765 the transverse gallery was dug out, which is where the visitors now enter the mine. The mine got its name from Prince Joseph Wenzel of Fuerstenberg who reigned over the Kinzig and Wolf Valleys at that time.
